Idols of Control
I think one of life's important lesson is to let go and let God. When we get into relationships the quickest thing we realize is that we no longer can control our environment, many things and surprise may come whether you like it or not. For a person likes to plan out things and go according to his expectation he might be easily offended, but perhaps God is training me to let go and let Him do the work. Maybe the person that's causing all these surprising events are not the one need to change (of course I agree our character can always improve), but maybe through these events God is telling us we are not in control. Maybe it wasn't the enemy stirring the winds and waves, but God through the circumstances reveal to me how unstable my inner life is.
What are we worship is what we need the most. In fact the definition of idolatry is this: anything that can effect your mood negatively when it's gone is an idol. If your friends are your idol, when they simply get busy and can't attend your needs, you'll get frustrated and angry. If the ideal wife the perfect woman is your idol, when she doesn't meet that when she becomes something else, you'll try everything to make her right forgetting only God can change a person. We have so many idols in our lives, maybe we don't bow down to them like the traditional sense, but we do attend their needs quite often. We simply cannot control our environment, if we do we become god of our environment. When Madam Guyon
Your worship is only true in environment that are outside of control, when your enemies surround you and seem to have the upper hand, only then your true worship will come forth. Do you depend on people? Medicine? Others? Who do you truly worship, who is truly your god? If Baal is god worship him, if Yahweh is God worship Him! Whoever can call down fire from heaven He is the true God of Israel. I think of Elijah when we talk about worship. The alter in the story represents our hearts, and the fire that consumes the altar represents presence of God's love that fills the longing of human heart. Only in true worship of Yahweh can fulfill every desire of a human heart. Worship is courtship that will truly satisfies you.
